Short answer: France and Italy have the lowest Louis Vuitton price tags, and Japan is much closer to US retail than its reputation suggests. Measured across the bags sold in all seven countries we track, the US tag runs about 10% above France, Korea about 19% above and Japan about 6% above. The widely repeated claim that Japan is 20-25% cheaper than the US has not been true since the yen recovered and Louis Vuitton raised Japanese prices.

Is Louis Vuitton cheaper in Japan?

Cheaper than the US, yes — but by about 3% on the tag, not the 20-25% that circulates online. That figure dates from the deepest point of the weak yen, before Louis Vuitton repriced in Japan. Japan is about 6% above France today.

Japan does get better once tax is counted. The Japanese tag includes 10% consumption tax that a tourist does not pay, which takes the Neverfull from $2,618 to roughly $2,380 — below the French tag, though not below France after a VAT refund.

What tax does to the ranking

The tags above are not like for like:

  • France, Italy, Germany include 20-22% VAT; a non-EU visitor reclaims roughly 12% net after the refund operator's fee. The Neverfull lands near $2,170.
  • Japan includes 10% consumption tax, which tourists skip entirely — around $2,380.
  • United Kingdom includes 20% VAT with no tourist refund since 2021, so you pay the $2,659 shown.
  • United States excludes sales tax; add roughly 4-9% to $3,050.
  • South Korea includes 10% VAT, partly refundable to visitors.

So for a visitor who can claim: France first, then Japan, then the UK, then Korea, then the US with tax. Always check your home country's duty-free allowance — the US exemption is $800 per traveller, Korea's is also $800, and duty on the excess can erase the saving.

Which country is most expensive?

South Korea, by a clear margin: about 19% above France and 8% above the US on the median bag. If you are shopping from Seoul, both Japan and Europe are worth the comparison — see Japan vs Korea and France vs Korea.

Bottom line

  • Lowest sticker price: France, Italy and Germany, all identical.
  • Lowest price a tourist actually pays: France after the VAT refund, with Japan a close second.
  • Japan vs the US: about 3% on the tag, roughly 12% once you skip Japan's consumption tax and add US sales tax.
  • Most expensive: South Korea.
