Short answer: no. Mainland China is one of the most expensive places in the world to buy Dior. The median item costs about 26% more in China than in France, Italy or Japan, and about 17% more than in Hong Kong, the UK or the US. Of the 41 markets we track, only Brazil is dearer.

We took every Dior item sold both in mainland China and in each market below and converted the listed prices at current exchange rates. The figure is the median gap, so half the items are closer and half are further apart. Measured October 2026 from Dior's own country sites.

The same bag, seven countries

Medians can hide the shape of the gap, so here are three Dior Book Totes priced in all seven markets on the same day, converted to US dollars:

Bag🇫🇷 FR🇯🇵 JP🇭🇰 HK🇺🇸 US🇨🇳 CN
Book Tote Medium, Macrocannage$4,086$4,178$4,396$4,400$5,006
Book Tote Medium, Dior Oblique$3,862$3,861$4,141$4,000$4,707
Book Tote Small, Macrocannage$3,638$3,735$3,950$3,900$4,483

On the Macrocannage Book Tote that is a $920 gap between Paris and Shanghai for the same bag. For today's numbers on every item, see Dior prices in China or compare China directly with France, Hong Kong and Japan.

Why is Dior more expensive in mainland China?

Three things stack on top of each other. China applies 13% VAT on most goods, an import duty on leather goods and apparel, and — for some categories — a consumption tax. Brands also price regionally rather than converting a single euro list price, and mainland China has long been set at a premium to Europe.

This is the arithmetic behind the long-running daigou trade: the gap between a European or Japanese boutique and a mainland one is wide enough that buying abroad and carrying home stays worthwhile even after travel. Note that China charges import duty on goods above the personal allowance when you re-enter, so the full 26% is not free money.

Is Dior cheaper in Hong Kong than mainland China?

Yes, by about 17% on the median item. Hong Kong has no VAT and no sales tax, which is most of the difference. Hong Kong is still around 8% above France and Japan, so it is a saving against the mainland rather than a global low.

Where is Dior actually cheapest?

Across every country we track, the lowest tags sit in Canada, Japan and the euro zone, which cluster within a few percent of each other. Two caveats before you book anything: Canadian and US prices are shown before sales tax, while Chinese, European, Japanese and Korean prices include it; and a non-resident visitor can reclaim part of the European VAT (roughly 12% net in France after operator fees) or skip Japan's 10% tax outright, which widens the gap against China further.

Bottom line

  • Buying in mainland China: expect to pay around a quarter more than in Paris, Milan or Tokyo for the same Dior item.
  • Travelling from China: Japan and the euro zone are the biggest savings, Hong Kong a smaller but closer one. Check China's personal import allowance before you count the whole gap as saved.
  • Travelling to China: do not plan to buy Dior there. It is the most expensive major market we measure outside Brazil.
