The same watch can differ by 20-35% between countries at official retail, before any tax refund. That spread is set by the brand, not by the exchange rate, and it is the single largest saving available on a watch purchase. Why watch prices differ so much by country

Swiss and French maisons set a recommended retail price per market, then adjust it a few times a year. Between adjustments, currencies move and the local price stays put — so a market can drift 15% cheap or expensive purely through lag. Three things drive the spread:

• Currency lag. When the yen weakened, Japan became one of the cheapest markets in the world for European watches overnight, and stayed that way until the brands repriced.
• Local tax. A price tag in Milan includes 22% VAT; a tag in Hong Kong or Dubai includes almost none. Tourists can reclaim some of the former, which narrows but rarely closes the gap.
• Market positioning. Brands deliberately price high in markets with strong demand and low price sensitivity, which is why the same reference is often dearest in the country where it sells best.

How to read the ranking above

The table counts, for every watch we track, which country sells it for the least once every price is converted to a common currency. A country that is cheapest for most of the catalogue is a genuinely cheap market rather than a market that happens to win on one reference. That distinction matters: brands do not discount uniformly, so a country can be the best place to buy one model and a poor place to buy another.

The tax refund changes the order

Retail price is the first filter; the refund is the tiebreaker. On a watch, the amounts are large enough that a few points genuinely matter — 14% back on a €12,000 purchase in Italy is roughly €1,700.

• 🇯🇵 Japan — 10% consumption tax refunded at the register, no airport queue. Combined with a weak yen this has been the strongest combination for several years.
• 🇮🇹 Italy, 🇫🇷 France, 🇩🇪 Germany — high sticker prices but the best refunds in the world, roughly 11-14% net. Often competitive once the refund lands.
• 🇨🇭 Switzerland — only 7.7% VAT, so the tag is already close to tax-free and the refund is small. Prices are usually keen and the selection is the best anywhere.
• 🇭🇰 Hong Kong, 🇦🇪 UAE — little or no VAT, so nothing to reclaim, but the shelf price is already tax-free. Strong on paper, though Dubai's prices are less aggressive than their reputation.
• 🇬🇧 United Kingdom, 🇺🇸 United States — no tourist refund. UK prices carry 20% VAT you cannot reclaim, and US prices gain sales tax at the till.

Where the cheapest country stops being the cheapest purchase

Three costs sit outside the price tag, and on a watch they are big enough to reverse the ranking.

• Import duty at home. The largest hidden cost. Most duty-free allowances for returning residents are a few hundred dollars — far below a luxury watch. Declared properly, you pay import duty plus domestic VAT on the full value, which routinely wipes out a foreign saving.
• Warranty and service. An international warranty is standard on the major brands, but service pricing and turnaround are local. A movement overhaul is a four-figure recurring cost, and a watch bought abroad is not always the easiest to service at home.

1. Decide the exact reference first. The cheapest country is model-specific, and aggregate rankings can mislead on a single item.
2. Check the live per-country price for that model on the watch category page.
3. Apply the net refund for the winning country, not its headline VAT rate.
